Metadata Transparency

As a project built on an ethos of care, we believe in transparency. The schema used for this archive follows the Dublin Core standard with guidance from Documenting The Now and the Archives For Black Lives in Philadelphia (A4BLiP) Anti-Racist Description Resource. Like our archive, our schema is an ever-changing and ever-evolving document and will likely be updated as the project progresses to meet the needs of its users. You can find the most up to date version of our schema here

Collection Practices

The content represented in this archive was collected in real-time during the summer 2020 Black Lives Matter protests by Taryn Gilligan. We believe it is important to note that due to the nature of these social media platforms and imperfect algorithms, the posts you see are only a small fraction of a much larger and ongoing movement. Gilligan collected posts in various Instagram "saved" folders and through screenshots that were then saved to a private server. We understand the limitations that come from this archival practice and would love to include posts, documents, and other forms of media captured at that time. If you would like to get involved please feel free to reach us at the email below.

Copyright & DMCA Take-Down Policy

If your content has been featured in The Digital Narratives of the #BlackLivesMatter Movement archive and would like to either request a change to the post, metadata, or perhaps like to have your post be shown fully and not anonymized, we welcome these requests and work swiftly to make these corrections as specified by the content's creator. If you are the content creator and would like your item removed from the archive, we only ask that you confirm that the item was indeed created by you and we will take it down with no questions asked.

We also welcome your feedback and suggestions. We believe that this archive functions best and is most authentic to the movement through community collaboration. If you have any thoughts or ideas on how we can improve, we would love to hear your thoughts!
