Project Goals & Intentions

The purpose of The Digital Narratives of the #BlackLivesMatter Movement Archive is to get people thinking critically about the importance and influence of personal narratives, specifically digital personal narratives on community formation and the rise of multimedia socio-political movements. Our goal is also to highlight the ways that slacktivism, performative allyship, and fair-weather activism can be harmful not only to the integrity of these powerful socio-political movements, but the marginalized communities in which they fight for.

Some Questions To Consider While Browsing The Archive:

  • Are there common themes that exist between posts regardless of which platform? If so, what are we to takeaway from these connections?
  • How are users sharing their stories and educating their  audiences differently on these two social media platforms? What are the commonalities and differences?
  • How does the lack of personal identifiers change your viewing experience? Does it make it more or less challenging to connect and empathize with the content creator by not knowing who they are?
  • How has your experience browsing this archive similar or different to the experiences that you have had with the Black Lives Matter Movement and protests on your personal Instagram and Twitter feeds and explore pages?
